چکیده

Electrical resistivity measurements performed on a single crystal of erbium as a function of temperature and hydrostatic pressure have provided a preliminary p–T phase diagram. The results have been interpreted in terms of a model for the magnetic structures of Er deduced from neutron diffraction studies at ambient pressure. This model predicted the existence of a magnetic structure with a wave vector of Q1⁄4 2=7 c* at 4.2K, when the applied pressure is larger than 3 kbar. This paper reports a neutron diffraction study of erbium made in the temperature range of 4 to 100K, at pressures between 0.5 and 6 kbar. We have observed the predicted suppression of the low temperature conical ferromagnetic phase and the emergence of a new phase with Q1⁄4 8=33 c*. The neutron diffraction measurements has enabled us to identify the various phases that develop from the cycloidal phases previously observed at atmospheric pressure.

IN-SITU OBSERVATION OF ErD2 FORMATION DURING D2 LOADING VIA NEUTRON DIFFRACTION

In an effort to better understand the structural changes occurring during hydrogen loading of erbium target materials, we have performed in-situ D2 loading of erbium metal (powder) at temperature (450C) with simultaneous neutron diffraction analysis. This experiment tracked the conversion of Er metal to the  erbium deuteride (solid-solution) phase and then on to the  (fluorite) phase. Complet...

Magnetic Phases of Sputter Deposited Thin-Film Erbium

We present a detailed structural and magnetic characterization of sputter deposited thin film erbium, determined by x-ray diffraction, transport measurements, magnetometry and neutron diffraction. This provides information on the onset and change of the magnetic state as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. Many of the features of bulk material are reproduced. Also of interest ...

A Neutron diffraction study of multiferroics RMn2O5

The magnetic properties of RMn2O5 multiferrroics as obtained by unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction experiments are reviewed. We discuss the qualitative features of the magnetic phase diagram both in zero magnetic field and in field and analyze the commensurate magnetic structure and its coupling to an applied electric field. The origin of ferrolectricity is discussed based on calcula...

Competing ferri- and antiferromagnetic phases in geometrically frustrated LuFe2O4.

We present a detailed study of magnetism in LuFe(2)O(4), combining magnetization measurements with neutron and soft x-ray diffraction. The magnetic phase diagram in the vicinity of T(N) involves a metamagnetic transition separating an antiferro- and a ferrimagnetic phase. For both phases the spin structure is refined by neutron diffraction. Observed diffuse magnetic scattering far above T(N) is...

Understanding the insulating phase in colossal magnetoresistance manganites: shortening of the Jahn-Teller long-bond across the phase diagram of La1-xCaxMnO3.

The detailed evolution of the magnitude of the local Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 is obtained across the phase diagram for 0< or =x< or =0.5 from high-quality neutron diffraction data using the atomic pair distribution function method. A local JT distortion is observed in the insulating phase for all Ca concentrations studied. However, in contrast with earlier local structure...
